Elephants in Main Street

We have often been asked these three questions. No matter where
we work, be it in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Australasia or
North-America…the same three questions come up:

• Why teambuilding?
• What is it?
• How does it work?

They emerge in the minds and on the tips of the tongues of nearly
every new, and even existing leader we meet. The truth of the matter is that we are all part of a team; in fact we are part of many teams.

Just think about it…we are part of a team from the very moment we arrive on this planet. We discover that in our quest to survive, we need to interact with others. It’s not that easy on your own, is it? You need a team to survive well.

So what is a team? Well at its simplest level, a team is a minimum of
two people who hopefully have a common goal or purpose, are in communication with one another and have a plan they both work on to achieve that goal or purpose together.

We are part of many teams. Families, classes, schools, lift pools, dinner parties, project networks, church associations, companies, fan clubs, countries and even Facebook are just a few to mention. Within each of these teams we have a choice in terms of how we
choose to survive….and that is really where teambuilding begins.

Effective teambuilding tips the scale of survival from a less optimum existence to a more optimum and fulfilling experience. Whilst some individuals would say, “I survive just fine on my own”, they might not have looked at the picture from a long term or big enough view.

Teambuilding is our only answer to making this world a better place, for us and for our children.

So we realise that if indeed we have a basic purpose to survive as mankind, that teambuilding is not just a short term instant gratification objective, but rather a long term strategy in building a sustainable future for yourself and others.

This is something that is not always confronted by the average team member, leader, partner or mentor. This is particularly true in the West, where we seem obsessed with quick fixes and managing the singular chapters in our careers.

Let’s compare short term survival versus working together for the long term vision as a team or group or nation. Team China and Team India. They are obviously aligning their goals in a far more successful way in terms of “What do I want for myself?”, “What do I want for my teams?”What do I want for my industry?” and “What do I want for my
country?”

Alright, let’s bring this back to our day to day existence. Where does teambuilding fit in, what is needed to build an effective team and how do we make it work?

Teambuilding (team member ability and application) relates to a scale of effectiveness that we all should have, that we should be “fit” or proficient in.

At the base of the scale is Personal Effectiveness, the ability to address problems as an individual and be in excellent communication with your environment. Just above this is Team Member Effectiveness, the ability to confront, communicate and comfortably solve problems together with others in pursuit of a common goal. This is followed by Supervisory, Leadership, Mentorship and Organisational effectiveness.

There are many forms of teambuilding and this is for good reason…there are many different types and combinations of needs that emerge for teams in terms of this scale.

Progressing up the scale we see that by raising the Personal Effectiveness of the members of the team, their team ability is directly improved. This is true at a supervisory or leadership level too.

Effective teambuilding is about creating better cultures and futures for your people.

Madiba’s 67 minute birthday gift

Posted by: admin In: Nation Building

An amazing initiative has come about by a well established corporate in the form of providing shelter for less fortunate canines…

How it all began….
A stray dog made its way to the clients’ offices. No sooner had the dog become a regular within the office park. Affectionately known as Sammy, this dog won the hearts of many of the staff and as a result – The Kennel Build project was born. Facilitated by Elephants in Main Street the project was not only rewarding for the participants but will bring joy for months to come.

On a lovely sunny afternoon the staff got together and built and painted eight dog kennels. Having the the furry four legged creaturesbest interest at heart, the enthusiastic kennel builders set to task, with much attention to detail.

We will publish some photographs and a followup once the kennels are handed over….Keep watching for updates :-)

“Not many companies offer truly great solutions.
Very few companies deliver phenomenal service.
And hardly any companies go above and beyond the customers expectations.

 Elephants in Main do!

I would like to thank you all on behalf of our entire group for an incredible weekend away. The feedback from everyone including founding members to week-old staff, executive directors to tea ladies and bench-warmers to champions was 100% positive.

The comments that flowed freely on our return to the office yesterday included “You had better retire now because you will not be able to better that next year”, “what an awesome weekend”, “where did you get such a great idea from, it was fantastic” and many many more, are a tribute to the success of the weekend.

It would not have been possible without Elephants in Main Street.

Personally, you have helped me achieve a very daunting task this year – communicating to our staff what, why and how Peresys do things. I can confidently say that everyone will be returning to work today with increased affinity and a crystal clear picture!

Guys, I look forward to working with you in the future - hopefully more regularly!”

Dear Liesel

Just a big thank you for all the arrangements and preparations you assisted me in making this team build event very special.  We had a great time and everyone was very impressed with the way things worked.
Please convey our thanks to your team for their great organisation.

 Much appreciated.

MTN Feedback

Posted by: admin In: Teambuilding Events

Dear Elephants team

Thanks for a wonderful teambuilding experience on 20 – 21 Nov 2008.  I thoroughly enjoyed the activities and how they were designed to integrate the broader MTN team present.

Unfortunately I had to leave earlier than planned on Friday therefore I was not around for the closing.  I was however just informed that my spontaneous comments to the camera were aired to the entire team after I’d left.  Thanks for telling me your intention, Mark. J  That was pure evil!
I started at MTN only this September and had concerns that I was not networking quickly enough – I suppose now EVERYONE will remember my face.

Now I’ll just have to pretend that none of it happened and put on my serious face around the office. Lol.

Once again, ta for a unique experience.

Cell C - Crime Scene Feedback

Posted by: admin In: Uncategorized

The Crime Scene event was absolutely fantastic.

We learnt so much, everyone has been singing Elephants in Main Street’s praises, we have never done something so interactive.

By the time the event was finish, we were brain dead and tired. Ueli and Hennie were very helpful and we had so much fun with them.

Hi Justine,
Thanks to Elephants for a great Monday afternoon.  I was not aware that we had so many Van Gogh’s in our department J J J
Thanks once again.
